Occupational hearing loss due to noise pollution is a problem that prevails in virtually every industrialized nation worldwide. It can be defined as the partial or complete loss of hearing in one or both ears resulting from inadequate hearing protection in the workplace. Hearing loss is a painless and insidious process, which is often ignored by both the employer and the employee until the hearing loss is significant and disabling. This results in a claim to W.S.I.B. for hearing loss. In fact, among all of the occupational hazards, noise is the biggest cause of permanent disability claims settled by the W.S.I.B. in Ontario! Noise pollution and the eventual hearing loss associated with it affects the individual in many ways. It can damage the ear, interfere with speech, communication and the ability to concentrate. Noise pollution can also affect the quality of the work done and interfere with safety on the job. Almost anyone can learn how to give someone a hearing test, but at MCI our staff also focus on employee education and prevention. We can provide in-clinic testing or make arrangements for on-site service (using a mobile unit) it you need to test a larger number of employees.
